About Kilian Bourke
Kilian Bourke was elected Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Romsey in May 2008.
He is a member of the Policy Development Group for Growth and Infrastructure. He is also on the Area Joint Committee for Cambridge and the East Area Committee.
Local issues he is working on include promoting Mill Road’s independent shops, making the area safer for cyclists, pedestrians and motorists, and hurrying up the environmental improvements which are long overdue in Romsey. He has been central to the development of the Mill Road Masterplan, which attempts to organise these different processes into an ambitious plan for the area. Particular improvements which are incorporated into this plan include new streetlighting, some kind of accident reduction scheme - possibly “shared space” - better pavements and improved cycling facilities.
Kilian supports local organisations such as Lifecraft, Brookfields hospital and St. Philip’s School. He is also receptive to plans for a new mosque in Romsey.
Kilian is committed to making radical improvements in the city’s transport infrastructure: if the Tif program goes ahead, he would like to see really substantial and sustainable changes of direction in our tranport policy, not just a few new bus routes and extra roads.
Personal
Kilian was born in 1981 in Dublin and was raised in County Down, Northern Ireland. Since 2001 he has lived in Cambridge
Education
Kilian studied English at Robinson College and is currently doing an Mphil in Screen Media and Cultures at Darwin. He is interested in European literature, philosophy and politics, and watches a lot of films.
Professional Work
In 2003 Kilian worked as an analyst for France Telecom on the logistics branch of the Top Sourcing program. This involved centralising the group’s purchasing contracts and restructuring its supply chain. In 2004 he worked for the International Herald Tribune newspaper in Paris, as a web-producer of the online edition.
He has also managed a small camping operation in Fontainebleau, France. Until recently he did comedy electric-bike traffic reports for Star Radio Cambridge and Ely (”Coleman the Patrolman”). He also runs the ground-operation of an environmentally-friendly Tourism company called Greenwheels Pedicab Tours.
