May Update
It’s been a busy couple of months for me, especially with the County Council election approaching, but apart from campaigning I’ve been working hard on other fronts:
Coldham’s Lane Bus Service - Further to our meeting with Stagecoach, Catherine Smart and I recently met with Whippet, to discuss the 114 service. They have agreed to look into running an earlier service Mon-Sat, but we will need to present them with a persuasive business case. Perhaps more importantly, they have agreed to provide real-time information at the bus-stops on Coldham’s Lane, if we can get the County Council to finance the installation of real-time signs. I am hoping there will be enough money from the Cromwell Road S106 funds to pay for this.
Environmental Improvements - Our ongoing campaign to have trees planted on Cromwell Road has been successful. We recently received funding to expand the grassy verges outside Winstanley Court, and to plant two large London Plane trees here. The County Council has also agreed to drill “trial holes” along the road, to ascertain if further planting is possible. This is an unprecedented step, and indicates just how seriously we are taking our project, “Greening Romsey”. Mill Road’s “hanging baskets” are also on their way.
Resurfacing Mill Road - Good news: further to pressure from your local councillors, the County Council has agreed to bring forward the resurfacing of Mill Road to June 17. This was urgently needed and I am glad the County have listened to us.
Accident Reduction Scheme - The Stakeholder Consultation for Mill Road’s Accident Reduction Scheme will be taking place shortly after the elections, although the date has yet to be finalised. This scheme is going ahead further to our succesful campaign earlier this year to have Mill Road’s October List funding reinstated this year, not in three years time.
Pothole Repairs - Ongoing! If you come across any on your travels let me know asap on 07737782295, and I will see that they are filled in.
20mph Win - The Conservative administration finally capitulated to pressure from the Lib Dem group to reverse its dangerous policy on 20mph speed limits, which made it almost impossible to introduce them. Hopefully this will enable us to make Romsey a blanket 20mph zone, with the exception of Coldham’s Lane, which is an arterial route.
